OSCAR IBARRA ROJAS

AUGUST 7, 1965 --SEPTEMBER 1, 2019

Oscar “OSCARITO” Ibarra Rojas ran peacefully into the arms of Jesus and his beloved Virgen de Guadalupe on the morning of September 1, 2019.  As a professional cook, lover all things cake, and joyful celebrant of each moment of life, Oscar moved all those who crossed his path to greater faith and appreciation of God’s provision.  Over the past 14 years, Oscar was the ongoing face of hospitality at Casa Guadalupana on St. Paul’s west side for guests, friends, and volunteers of the ministry.  Whether cooking enchiladas for 200 people on the December Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, teaching a new Casa volunteer how to make “refrigerator soup” from all the week’s leftovers, or frying fish with the St. Matt’s Men’s Club,  you could find Oscar joking and sharing smiles with those around him.

Oscar’s sheer love of life and determined energy despite overwhelming health challenges continuously amazed and inspired his friends, health providers, and fellow church members.  His generous and humble spirit was matched only by this determination, endearing him to many. As an immigrant from Mexico, Oscar’s road was never easy, yet he never failed to tell you how incredibly blessed and grateful he felt every day for all that God had given him.

In the final week of his life, Oscar’s dear friend Gerardo took him on a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe where his heart was filled with tremendous happiness and peace.  It is suspected that on that day, Oscar detailed the menu for his upcoming RESURRECTION DAY FEAST with Our Lady and the Lord to be certain there would be mocha cake.

A Celebration of Oscar’s joyful life and resurrection will be held Thursday September 12th at the Church of St. Matthew, 510 Hall Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55107.  Quiet time for individual remembrance will be available in the small chapel from 4-5:30, the Rosary prayed in English and Spanish at 5:30 and Funeral Mass at 6:00 PM in the main church.  Following, in honor of Oscar’s love of hospitality, food and stories of his life will be shared by his friends together across the street at the Casa Guadalupana, 507 Hall Avenue.  All are welcome.

______
