Lloyd G. Schnelle

Lloyd George Schnelle, 93, proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, passed away peacefully May 4th, 2021.  Born February 11th, 1928, he was the third son to Stanley H. Schnelle and Marion E. McIlree.  Lloyd was raised in Olivia, Minnesota, and his experience with the Great Depression as a child profoundly affected him the rest of his life.  He joined the United States Marine Corps after his brother died in Okinawa, just before WWII ended.  He was only 17 and left before finishing high school. He served 19 years in the United States Marine Corps, serving in WWII, Korea and Vietnam before retiring from service.  Upon retirement, he began a second career as a city manager for the towns of Granite Falls, Chanhassen, Ramsey, Monticello and Worthington, Minnesota, and was noted in the Midwestern Who’s Who in 1974-75. He and Barbara spent winters in Sun City, Arizona, and summers in Minnesota, making friends wherever he went. He was a fantastic storyteller.

In 1959 he married Barbara Johnson.  They were married 50 years and he spent many years being the main caretaker for Barbara after she became wheelchair bound from a stroke. He is predeceased by his late wife.  He enjoyed collecting art and was fortunate to be in good health well into his 90’s.

He had six siblings that lived to adulthood and enjoyed strong relationships with them all.  He is predeceased by his parents; and siblings Gordon J. Schnelle, Keith D. Schnelle, Thomas S. Schnelle, Katherine D. Quinlan (nee’ Schnelle), Lois J. Merriman (nee’ Schnelle), Virginia M. Trump (nee’ Schnelle) and Carolyn E. Schnelle.  He is survived by his many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service Monday, June 7 at 11:00 AM at SIMPLE TRADITIONS by BRADSHAW (671 S. Snelling Ave., St Paul) with visitation one half hour prior to the service with a livestream provided by the funeral home. Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
