David John Bartlett

David Bartlett sadly passed away suddenly on 18th December 2023. He was 76 years old. David was a professional Organist.
David's musical career began as a young chorister in the local family church in Folkestone, Kent, England. He often played the organ there as a young boy. He attended the Royal College of Music, London where he was a student of Ralph Downes. He then moved to Salzburg where he studied at the Mozarteum with Michael Schneider. He participated many times in the Haarlem Summer Organ Academy. David moved to the USA in 1975 as a graduate student at Washington University. While there he prepared a series of lectures on the operas of Benjamin Britten. David was the organist at Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit, Michigan, USA and then at Cathedral Church of St. Mark's in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Most recently, he retired as the music director from St. Helena Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, where he served for more than a decade.
In addition to his work as an organist and Choral Conductor, he composed several hymn tunes, anthems and Carol settings many of which are still in use in Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit.
David was the eldest son of Nancy (nee Henderson) and Jack Bartlett. He is preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Neville. David leaves behind a sister, Janet; 3 nephews, Mark, Paul and James Appleton; and 5 great nieces and nephews, Millie Mae, Seth, Aubree Lea, Samuel and Jacob. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service for David will be held at St. Helena Catholic Church, 3204 E. 43rd St, Minneapolis, MN 55406 on Thursday, January 25 at 11am CST. The service will be LIVESTREAMED on this page. Visitation one hour prior. Luncheon to follow.
