Wayne Smitham

July 2, 1939 — January 5, 2026

Wayne Pierce Smitham, 86, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026. Born on July 2, 1939, in Cloquet, Minnesota, Wayne lived a life marked by deep faith, joyful service, and unwavering devotion to Jesus Christ. After graduating from high school, Wayne pursued his passion for ministry and biblical study at North Central Bible College. His love for Scripture and spiritual growth remained a guiding force throughout his life. He was an avid student of the Bible and continually sought to deepen his intimacy with Jesus through study and prayer. Wayne's professional career included employment at Douglas Corporation. However, it was through his ministry and volunteer work that he left an indelible mark on countless lives. For over three decades, Wayne faithfully served at Metro Hope Ministries (formerly New Hope Center), an addiction treatment center in Minneapolis. There, he sang, preached, and played his guitar-bringing hope and healing through music and the message of the Gospel. His musical gifts extended beyond the walls of Metro Hope Ministries. Wayne hosted a program on KNOF FM radio called the Good News Broadcast, where he shared songs of faith and encouragement. His signature song, "I Keep Falling in Love with Him," became a heartfelt anthem that reflected his enduring relationship with Christ. Wayne's commitment to spreading the Gospel reached across continents. Alongside his lifelong friend George Varghese, he co-founded United Fellowship Outreach-a ministry dedicated to supporting Christians in India. This endeavor exemplified Wayne's global vision for sharing God's love and strengthening believers around the world. A man who found joy in God's creation, Wayne cherished time outdoors. He loved walking, bicycling, and spending peaceful days at his cabin in Willow River, Minnesota. These moments of solitude were often filled with reflection and gratitude for the beauty of nature. Wayne is survived by his beloved wife Chansophy; his sister Della; nephews Darrell Antilla (Charlene) and Gary Antilla (Hope); as well as other nieces, nephews, and many dear friends who were touched by his kindness and unwavering faith. He was preceded in death by his parents Abraham (Percy) and Ruth Smitham; his sister Lois Hanson; and brother-in-law Jerry Antilla. Wayne's life was a testament to discipleship-every action rooted in love for Jesus and others. He lived each day with purpose: enjoying God's presence and making Him known wherever he went.
