GOETHEL
Ruth Nelson
Age 90, passed away October 1, 2014 at Golden Oaks in Proctor, MN. Preceded in death by her husband, Arno Goethel; parents, Hilma and Ted Nelson; brother, Roy Nelson; and sisters, Violet Nelson and Alice Nelson. Survived by nieces, Cheryl Nelson Paskett (Harv), Carol Nelson Murray (Len), and Judy Nelson Bergman. Also survived by many great nieces and nephews. Ruth was born and raised in Duluth and met Arno when they were in the 7th grade. They graduated from Denfeld High School and, following Arno's military service in WWII, they were married and remained together for nearly 48 years until Arno's death in 1996. The couple relocated several times until, in 1953, Arno was offered a sportswriter position with the Duluth News Tribune. When the Twins moved to Minnesota in1961, Arno became the baseball writer for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Ruth was an avid baseball fan; attending all the home games, traveling to the away-games when she could, entertaining team members in their home, and accompanying Arno to the Twins Spring Training. Many of his sports columns started with the salutation, "Dear Ruth". He mentioned Ruth many times in his columns and referred to her as Ruth from Duluth. They both had a quick sense of humor, loved life, and were deeply devoted to each other. Special thanks to the staff at Golden Oaks Assisted Living for their wonderful care. At Ruth's request, there will be a graveside service on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 1:05 P.M. at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, where Ruth will be buried next to her beloved husband. Meet at Assembly Area #1.
