Robert passed away peacefully in his sleep at the amazing VA Hospital in Minneapolis after years of struggling with ALS. He had served in the Army Reserves. While unfortunately almost completely paralyzed for the past year, he still continued to try and take care of and advise his sisters and friends. That was who he was, full of wisdom, kindness, and generosity. He felt it was his duty, as the only son in his family, to look out for his sisters to the end. He was a good man who was very responsible, considerate, and devoted. He was also a good neighbor, often trying to help others.
He is preceded in death by his son, Alexander, and his sisters, Sharron and Karen. He is survived by his wife, Wendi; his son, Nathanial (Tanya); his sisters, Deborah, Niomi, Lana (Jim), and his grandsons, Jacob, Max, and Justin, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Robert loved to camp up north in his RV, ride his various motorcycles and snowmobiles, ride his ATV, go fishing in his boat, and hit thrift stores and yard sales along the way.
He had worked as a commercial painter up until his ALS diagnosis which forced him to retire. He used to have his own carpentry business with his son, Alexander, and also worked as an instructor at Summit Academy for many years. He was the kind of guy who could build or fix anything and loved to teach Alexander everything he had learned from his father and from life, often fixing and rebuilding bicycles and all different kinds of motorcycles, in addition to carpentry projects.
Prior to being debilitated by ALS, Robert taught his wife to ride motorcycles, and they spent time riding together on the country roads around Hugo and up north. They met in their late 50's, and it was the first marriage for both of them. Robert also loved to flirt with the ladies, with his blond hair and blue eyes, and had one of those smiles that would light up a room.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Robert and Alexander on the first day of spring, Saturday, March 20, 2027. Details will be forthcoming.
