On April 3, 2026, Matthew "Matt" Anthony Idzik (57) of Saint Paul, MN passed away unexpectedly in his home. His death brings great sadness to his family and friends.
Matt was born on May 1, 1968 in Cheektowaga, Erie County, NY to Joanne D. Idzik (nee Riter) and the late Robert E. Idzik.
Matt was blessed with a highly brilliant and creative mind, along with a great thirst for knowledge. With a hefty appetite for adventure and a very spontaneous side you were guaranteed a grand adventure on any given day spent with him. He was exceedingly generous and would help anyone out in need with his time and resources. He was a self-taught gourmet chef, avid reader and loved playing chess, throwing darts, and the Buffalo Bills.
Matt was raised in Clifton Park in Saratoga County, NY and graduated from Shenendehowa High School in 1986. He attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA before joining the Army in 1988. He served in the U.S. Army's 82 nd Airborne Division (PSYOP group), stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC (now Fort Liberty). In 1990 and 1991, he and his brigade served on a special task force as the first U.S. force deployed in the Gulf War's Operation Desert Shield/Storm in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Following his military service, Matt earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, then worked in admissions at Boston's Suffolk University.
Relocating to Saint Paul, Minnesota, Matt joined the staff at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul as an Admissions Counselor and Veteran Liaison. He cared deeply about veterans and their challenges.
Matthew is survived by his loving mother Joanne and his sisters, Mary Geib (Rick) of Hummelstown, PA; and Eileen Murphy (Michael) of Glen Rock, NJ. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Kieran, Grace, Lark, Daniel, and Jeffrey; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The memorial service and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. The family has entrusted Simple Traditions Funerals and Cremations of St. Paul with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to NAMI Homefront of Minnesota at 1919 University Ave. W., Suite 400, St. Paul, MN 55104.
