In Loving Memory of Keith Jonathan Thompson

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Keith Jonathan Thompson, who passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026, at the age of 70, with his beloved wife by his side.

Keith was born on September 26, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, to Abraham Thompson, Sr. and Wilma (Bledsoe) Murray.

Keith discovered his love of music at an early age, beginning to sing on stage in Chicago at just 10 years old. Inspired by legendary artists including B.B. King, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, James Brown, Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke, Johnny Mathis, and Sammy Davis Jr., he went on to become a gifted and unforgettable performer.

As a young singer, Keith shared the stage at local talent shows with The Jackson Five, The Chi-Lites, The Dells, Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers, The Five Stairsteps, Jerry Butler, and The Delfonics, and later opened for Larry Graham & Graham Central Station, and The Mystics.

Throughout his career, Keith performed at many venues and events, including the Cook County Jail, Regal Theater, Arie Crown Theater at McCormick Place, South Shore Country Club, Minnesota Music Café, Xcel Energy Center, Hat Trick, Arnelia's, Bunkers, The Pourhouse, Governor Dayton's campaign event at the MLK Center, the Dry Bones Blues Festival, and Recovery Church in St. Paul.

After moving to Minnesota in 2004, Keith continued his musical journey, singing lead with the Flatfootrollers, CodeSweat, and occasionally with Swing & A Miss. He preferred Jonathan Keith as his stage name, so as a solo artist, his wife lovingly coined for him The Jonathan Keith Experience.

Keith was a man of two remarkable sides. Offstage, he was humble, down-to-earth, grateful, and a man of simple means who never asked for much. He was deeply supportive of those he loved, especially his wife and her desire to help and give to others.

But when Keith stepped onto a stage, he transformed. Dressed in fabulous suits, perfectly matched ties, polished shoes, and his unmistakable style, he became larger than life. People who saw him perform for the first time would sometimes ask, "Is that Keith?" He gave everything he had to his audiences, and many were blessed by his charisma during his performances.

In 2018, Keith became ill and had to step away from performing. Missing music and the stage deeply, he found another way to share his gift by putting on neighborhood outdoor concerts. His love of music and his ability to connect with people continued to touch lives.

Above all, Keith was a loving husband. He and his wife Latresia shared a deep and unconditional love. Keith told her he loved her every day, sometimes more than once a day, and she never walked out the door without him telling her how beautiful or good she looked. Through his words and actions, Keith made her feel unconditionally loved by another human being. That love will remain with her forever.

Keith's music, kindness, humor, gratitude, and unforgettable presence will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him. He was a humble man in everyday life and a magnificent performer under the lights-and both were truly Keith.

He was preceded in death by

His parents; his brothers, Harvey Thompson and Rodney Thompson; and his grandson, Qui Ari Lane.

He leaves to mourn

His beloved wife, Vera Latresia Thompson; his daughters, Patrice Thompson and Keisha (David) Wilkins; his son, Keith (Rosemary) Taylor; his stepsons, Christopher Dixon, Emmanuel Garrett, and Mikal Garrett; his brothers, Abraham Thompson Jr., Jeff Thompson, and Tim (Michelle) Murray; his stepbrothers, Gordon (Mary) August and Michael August; his stepsister, Sheryl Archie; five grandsons, two granddaughters, two great-granddaughter, and six step-granddaughters; Special friends, Nathaniel Robinson and Danny and Twana Alford along with other family members, friends, fellow musicians, and all those whose lives were touched by his music and his presence.

Keith Jonathan Thompson will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.

Celebration of Life for Keith will be held from 11AM-1PM, on Friday, September 4, at Simple Traditions by BRADSHAW (488 Humboldt Ave. St. Paul). Parking can be found in the parking lot adjacent, on both sides of the streets on Humboldt Ave., and the side streets.
