George Edward Shetka

George E. ("Joe") Shetka, age 89, of Sebring, FL, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2026, with his children by his side.

He graduated from Cretin High School in 1954 and in 1955 enlisted in the Air Force where he served as a jet engine mechanic until 1958. In 1957 he married his life-long sweetheart, Rose Marie Vomela. Following his military service he worked at George Shetka and Sons steel fabrication business. In 1968 he and his father founded Metcon, Inc. After they closed the business, he managed Vomela Wild Rice Co. in Aitkin, MN. When the farm sold, he and Rose Marie began their Florida retirement adventures in Islamorada, Marco Island, and finally Sebring. They spent summers in Dubois, WY, where Joe loved to fish and hunt. He was a volunteer fire fighter in St. Paul Park. His other pastimes included scuba diving, trapping, and snowmobiling. He was an accomplished pilot, sea captain, and enjoyed tinkering with motors. He was a member of the American Legion, Commemorative Air Force, AOPA, and NRA.

Preceded in death by parents George T. Shetka and Helen (Kopet) Shetka, and wife Rose Marie Shetka.

Survived by brothers Allen (Carol) and Roy "Jake" (Kathy) Shetka, children Debra A. Shetka (Jim Leary), George J. Shetka (Leah), Grandchildren George K. Shetka (Pam), Amanda R. Smith (Richard), Geoffrey H. Shetka (Julie), Sarah M. Shetka, Katherine F.S. Leary (Elise), Daniel E.S. Leary, and nine great grandchildren.

A Visitation for Joe will be held from 4-7PM, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Simple Traditions by BRADSHAW (671 Snelling Ave. S., St. Paul, MN). Military Honors 11 a.m. the following day at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.
