Dorothy Carlson Stewart passed away on May 12, 2025, after a year in comfortable hospice care in Saint Paul, MN surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 11, 1941, in New Britain, Connecticut, Dottie attended Mount Holyoke College and went on to earn her master's degree from Case Western Reserve School of Applied Social Sciences, where she met James Brewer Stewart. She shared a life of love and partnership with him for 60 years. They made their home in the Macalester-Groveland neighborhood on Princeton, residing in a beautifully restored 200-year-old house filled with cherished antiques and surrounded by her delightful perennial flower gardens. She spent summers at the cabin on Crystal Lake, gardening, reading, solving NYT crosswords in pen, and hosting family in creating lasting memories with friends, children and grandchildren.
Dorothy is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Rebecca Stewart and Jennifer Stewart; her son-in-law, David Holm; and her grandsons, Bjorn Holm (Emma McHenry), Severin Holm, and Oskar Holm. She is also survived by her brother, Richard Carlson, and his wife Dorothy; nieces Cathy (Rogério Vasconcelos), grand-nephews Victor and Felipe Vasconcelos, Ruth Carlson, and nephew Robert Carlson. Her legacy of "arms all around" continues through the lives of those she held dear.
After researching her family genealogy, learning how to speak Swedish and traveling to the birthplaces of her ancestors to meet their descendants, Dorothy maintained strong ties with extended family in Sweden. In Strandtorp, Pär and Stina Åberg; Maria Åberg (Anders Landgren), Elsie and Olivia; Mikael (Maria Åberg), Åsa Wäbring (daughters Anna, Sara, Emma, Lina). In Foglabäck Eleanor, Christer and Olle Lobäcken.
Dorothy's life was marked by enduring family bonds that spanned generations and continents. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her. She will be laid to rest with Jim in late June at Acacia Cemetery with a small family graveside gathering. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Swedish Institute at https://asimn.org/support/donate/ .
